flight of ideas
Definition A term of art for a rapid flow of accelerated speech characterised by abrupt changes from one topic to another, based on understandable, chance or temporal associations. The ideas appear continuous, but are fragmented and in extreme cases, speech is disorganised or incoherent. Flight of ideas is most typical of the manic phase of bipolar disorder.
