A popular term for the constellation of symptoms seen in middle-aged women whose children have left home (the “nest”) for college/university, career, marriage, etc., to seek their own way in life.

Clinical findings Depression, low self-esteem, loneliness, as mom has lost her principal raison d’être–i.e., raising children, who no longer depend on the mama bird for their needs. It is less common, but also occurs in men.
