PSYCHIATRY

A popular term for a guilt complex which occurs in a person who breaks a parental “law” that the law breaker, often a child, did not previously know was forbidden–e.g., incestuous overtures with a sibling.

The name refers to Adam’s fall from grace in the garden of Eden (as here depicted by Michelangelo. who between 1508 and 1512 painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican, under the patronage of pope Julius II), when he and Eve succumbed to the serpent’s temptation to eat fruit from The Tree of Knowledge (of good and evil).
