Haber-Weiss reaction

CELL BIOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY

Definition An intracellular event that generates • OH–hydroxyl radicals from H2O2–hydrogen peroxide and superoxide–•O2.

H2O2 + •O2– = OH• + OH– + O2

Comment The Haber-Weiss reaction occurs when superoxide dismutase and catalases are overwhelmed and cannot degrade the superoxides, peroxides, and other toxic free radicals in tissues.
