The gene on chromosome 9q34.3 that encodes carboxyl ester lipase (OMIM: 114840, UniProtKB: P19835)a glycoprotein secreted by the exocrine pancreas into the common bile duct and from the lactating breast into milk, which is involved in hydrolysis and absorption of cholesterol and lipid soluble vitamin esters.

Molecular pathology Defects in CEL cause maturity-onset diabetes of the young 8 with exocrine dysfunction–MODY8 (OMIM:609812)
