An agent that was once popular as a topical antiseptic. Its perceived efficacy was based solely on the fact that it turned the skin bright red.
Whilst it is available in most countries, the FDA removed it from the “generally recognised as safe” category and, and by reclassifying it as “untested”, killed its US distribution due to concern about mercury poisoning. It was completely withdrawn from the US market in 1998
