clinical superiority

A phrase used in the context of the Orphan Drug Act, which provide incentives for pharmaceutical companies to develop therapies for rare–orphan–disorders, and gives the drug’s developer a 7-year market exclusivity. A new agent or drug can enter the market if it has better outcomes than the therapy currently used to manage the orphan disease–i.e., it demonstrates clinical superiority.
