growth spurt

PAEDIATRICS

Definition A period of rapid growth in height seen in most normal male and female adolescents which corresponds to growth of long bones at the epiphyseal plates.

Comment Whilst most boys are ±2 cm shorter than girls when puberty begins, they are ±13 cm taller at the end, a difference which is attributed to the slower and lower rise of estradiol in boys. The growth spurt lasts ±4 years in girls and ±6 years in boys.
