Definition A symptom complex which may affect infants with congenital rubella syndrome. In addition to the typical findings of rubella*, expanded rubella syndrome  symptoms include hepatosplenomegaly, thrombocytopaenic purpura, intrauterine growth retardation, interstitial pneumonia, myocarditis, metaphyseal bone lesions

*Congenital heart disease, corneal clouding, microcephaly, mental retardation, deafness
