Rover, Binky, Baby

Definition A clinical measure of the ability of an infant to maintain calm stability and an interest in his/her surroundings by placidly sucking on a pacifier.

The name derives from an account by M. Borgeson, MD, of an infant whose over-hasty intubation for mere tachypnea without respiratory distress was averted by a nurse who placed a pacifier (Playtex produces the Binky™ line of pacifiers) in the child’s mouth, demonstrating a positive Binky™ Test, and stopping an unnecessary procedure.
