low power H&E stained section with multiple “peninsulas” in Kaposi sarcoma

PATHOLOGY

Definition A histopathological finding in the patch (early) stage of Kaposi sarcoma, in which pre-existing vessels and/or hair follicles jut into widely dilated, jagged, thin-walled neoplastic vascular spaces lined by attenuated endothelial cells that surround pre-existing superficial and periadnexal vascular plexi.

In the above image, one sees clusters of extravasated red cells at 9 o’clock and jagged peninsulas (and islands) at the centre extending to 3 o’clock.
