Definition A rare—16 cases in the world literature as of 2009–type of melanoma which develops in utero, arising in melanocytic nevi, in large or giant congenital nevi or, less commonly, is acquired transplacentally. They may grow rapidly, ulcerate, bleed and metastasise. Metastases at the time of initial examination correlates poorly with survival.
