weight bearing dome
A term of art for the cupular region of the acetabulum that receives most of the pressure from the femoral head in a standing person. Unreduced fractures crossing the weight-bearing dome of the acetabulum lead to arthritis, making integrity of the dome a critical prognostic indicator in acetabular fractures. A displaced fracture crossing the dome is an indication for surgery.
