Handigodu syndrome

A rare–1000 cases in the world literature–osteoarthropathy (spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia) seen in India, which affect the knees and hips of all age groups.*

*Named Handigodu for the village in Karnataka’s Malnad region of India, where it was first identified.

Aetiology Uncertain, possibly consanguinity, consumption of pesticide-laden crabs, low protein intake

Clinical findings Severe acute knee and hip pain; severe forms cause death by age 25.

Management Symptomatic 

Synonyms Arthritis of Malnad, Handigodu joint disease, Handigodu disease
