testicular sperm aspiration

Definition One of several methods for retrieving sperm in the context of assisted reproduction.

Method A needle is passed through the scrotal skin into the testis. Once the needle is in, numerous excursions of the needle under suction are made in order to retrieve bits of testicular tissue. If obstruction had been previously diagnosed, TESA sperm is usually be adequate for a cycle of IVF-ICSI on the same day, but is not optimised for freezing and subsequent use. In the presence of poor sperm production, TESA may be performed via multiple entry points in the testis to localise sperm production for subsequent open testicular sperm extraction.
