A hearing benchmark used to assess differential sensitivity to changes in the loudness of sounds.

Method A person is exposed to a pure tone of 1000 Hz, the intensity of which is increased in 1-5 dB intervals. The testee indicates to the tester each time he/she hears an increase in intensity. A damaged cochlear system results in an increased number of signals, as there is increased sensitivity to changes in sound.
