quantitative sudomotor axon test

A clinical test used to assess the integrity of distal postganglionic sympathetic nerve fibres.

Technique Sympathetic nerve fibres to the sweat glands are stimulated at standard sites by iontophoresis of acetylcholine and the evoked sweat response measured by sudometers. The test is typically performed on one forearm site and three sites on the lower extremities–or in 2 upper and 2 lower extremity sites–to determine the severity and distribution of the sympathetic deficit.
