VETERINARY MEDICINE

Definition An autosomal recessive condition affecting pigs which, like malignant hyperthermia in humans, is caused by a defective ryanodine receptor, resulting in a large calcium influx, muscle contracture and increased metabolism. It may be triggered by stress, halothane anaesthesia and intense exercise.

Management Sedation, corticosteroids; minimise their stress during slaughter.*

*Position them face down on the guillotine
