CLARITY

NEUROLOGY

An experimental technique developed at Stanford University by K Deisseroth, to examine intact neural connections in the brain postmortem.

Method The brain is infused with acrylamide, which binds proteins, nucleic acids and other biomolecules, but not lipids, which are opaque, then heated, at which point the acrylamide polymerises and forms an optically clear tissue-filling mesh that secures the biomolecules. The resulting brain–hydrogel hybrid has only has an 8% protein loss after lipid extraction, compared to 41% with existing methods.
