NEPHROLOGY

Definition A system created in 2002 by the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative to develop evidence-based guidelines for treating and preventing acute renal failure (ARF), and provide definitions and a classification system for ARF.

Investigators have since applied the RIFLE system to the evaluation of acute kidney injury, even though it wasn’t originally intended for that purpose. 

Abbreviation for Risk Injury Failure Loss End-Stage Kidney Disease, Risk of renal dysfunction Injury to the kidney, Failure or Loss of kidney function and End-stage kidney disease
