metastatic workup

The assessment of a patient with a high stage cancer and a significant risk of dissemination, for the presence of metastatic lesions.

Metastatic workups may be triggered by node positivity and are often imaging based studies of tissues and organs that are common recipients–e.g., liver, lungs, brain, bone, of malignancies that have spread from other primary sites.

Per the American College of Surgeons, a metastatic workup is only indicated for N2/N3 breast cancer patients with T3 or T4 primary lesions.

Synonyms Metastatic assessment, metastatic evaluation
