Definition A descriptive term of art referring to the endoscopic appearance of moderately severe ulcerative colitis, which has a coarse granular mucosal surface, fancifully likened to that of wet sandpaper.

The appearance may be accompanied by superficial erosions, ulcers and facile bleeding with minimal trauma.
