gas-bloat syndrome


Definition The inability to vomit and/or de-gas after Nissen fundoplication for reflux oesophagitis, a common* complication of the Nissen repair for hiatal hernia, a procedure that corrects most gastro-oesophageal reflux–GERD/GORD. The bloating is attributed to vagal injury.

*Affects 1% to 85% patients, depending on diagnostic criteria
