call to stool

Definition A popular term for the neural signal that follows arrival of faecal ordnance in the rectum, which tells the pilot that the bomb-bay doors can be opened and the 500-pounders released.

Mechanism Once the pilot squats, the puborectalis muscle and external anal sphincter are inhibited, allowing the rectoanal angle to straighten; the levator ani contracts, limiting inferior movement of the pelvic floor and anus, which would otherwise occur with straining; internal anal sphincter tone is inhibited; a voluntary Valsalva is performed with contraction of the anterior abdominal wall, increasing intraabdominal pressure and releasing faeces per anus.
