somatostatinoma syndrome 


An über rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by ectopic somatostatin secretion, often from a malignant neuroendocrine tumour located at the head of the pancreas

Clinical findings Vomiting, hypochlorhydria and achlorhydria, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, malabsorption, weight loss, cholelithiasis, poor glucose control, causing secondary diabetes mellitus, steatorrhoea, anaemia

Laboratory Increased somatostatin, which evokes a  reactive reduction in insulin, glucagon, and gastrin.

Management Surgical resection, chemotherapy with 5-FU and doxorubicin
