ENDOCRINOLOGY 

Definition A popular term for an inland region of North America, encompassing the Great Lakes, the Midwest, Appalachia, northern half of the USA and most of Canada, in which goiter was once common in the population due to lack of iodine.

Comment Treatment of iodine deficiency by the introduction of iodised salt has virtually eliminated the goiter belt in these and intermountain regions, where goiter was once common, as diet was based primarily on foods grown on iodine-depleted soil, which triggered the development of goiter.
