DERMATOLOGY, PATHOLOGY

A rare variant of malignant melanoma that is jet black and composed of a confluent proliferation of melanocytes with striking melanin synthesis reminiscent of vertical growth phase melanoma, and analogous to melanocytic lesions in ageing horses.

Animal type melanomas in humans tend to metastasise to regional lymph nodes, are more indolent in younger patients, but are capable of causing disseminated disease and death.

Synonyms Equine type melanoma, melanosarcoma (in part)
