cardioprotection

A popular term for the pharmacological–e.g., adenosine, atrial natriuretic peptide, and cyclosporine, and interventional techniques* used to prevent or reduce myocardial cell death during ischaemia and subsequent reperfusion.

*Ischaemic post-conditioning and remote ischemic pre-conditioning, both of which can reduce infarction size. Lowering core body temperature with cold saline infusion and cooling catheters may also work.
