aldosterone escape

A phenomenon in which angiotensin II or aldosterone return to pretreatment levels despite the patients receiving continuous ACE* inhibition for hypertension.

Pathogenesis Uncertain; the phenomenon is attributed to non-ACE synthetic pathways which produce angiotensin II by action of serine proteases–e.g., chymase, cathepsin G and tissue plasminogen activator.
