ANATOMY, ENT

Myosin-controlled filamentous structure located at the tips of stereocilia which connect stereocilia tips in adjacent rows of stereocilia bundles and acts like tiny gating springs for opening K+ channels.

The influx of K+ evokes a change in membrane potential which is proportional to the auditory stimulus. Tip links are also involved in force transmission across the bundle and in maintaining the hair bundle structure (right and left images show changes in the channels).
